Participation for urban sports and public space
A successful participation process creates support, stronger designs and a smoother delivery process. By involving users, residents and other stakeholders from the start, you gain a clear understanding of what a place needs and what matters to the people around it. The result is a design that works for its users and fits its surroundings.

Great designs are not created at the drawing board alone. Developing a skatepark or urban sports facility means balancing different needs, interests and expectations. Bringing these perspectives together early helps identify opportunities and potential challenges before they become problems.
Through design workshops, users, clients and design teams come together to discuss the project and shape the design. Information sessions and community meetings give residents and other stakeholders the opportunity to share their views. This creates a design that is not only technically and spatially strong, but also responds to the people and place it is designed for.

Why is a participation process important?
A participation process brings different interests and perspectives together at an early stage. Users know what they need, residents understand the local context, while clients define the ambitions, requirements and boundaries of the project.
By bringing this knowledge together early, concerns and potential objections can be addressed while there is still room to make changes to the design. This helps build support and reduces the risk of unexpected issues during implementation.
Participation also provides valuable real-world insight into how a location is used. This knowledge helps create a design that responds to its users, its surroundings and the way the space will actually function.
How we encourage user participation
A participation process only works when people have a genuine opportunity to contribute. That's why we create several moments throughout the process where users, residents and other stakeholders can discuss needs, requirements, concerns and opportunities.
We capture the input in a Programme of Requirements and Wishes, which forms an important basis for the next stage of the design. Together with the client, we assess what the input means for the design, budget, planning and feasibility.
Not every request can be implemented. By making these choices transparent and managing expectations throughout the process, everyone understands how their input contributes to the final result.ntwerp, de planning, de uitvoerbaarheid en het beschikbare budget.
Niet iedere wens kan worden uitgevoerd. Door keuzes inzichtelijk te maken en verwachtingen goed te managen, ontstaat een helder proces waarin deelnemers weten wat er met hun input gebeurt.
Building ownership together
When users and the surrounding community are involved from the beginning, participation creates more than support. It creates ownership and engagement with the place itself.
The result is an urban sports park or skatepark that responds to its users, fits naturally into its surroundings and encourages movement, interaction and community.
These municipalities have gone before you
From a skatepark in a newly developed railway district to large-scale urban sports projects, municipalities across the Netherlands have used participation to bring users, communities and project stakeholders together.
